Iso-Wetlands: unlocking wetland ecologies and agriculture in prehistory through sulfur isotopes

چکیده
Iso-Wetlands is a new, NERC-funded collaborative research project involving researchers at UCL Institute of Archaeology, the University Leeds and UK Centre for Ecology Hydrology. The developing sulfur isotope analysis archaeological plants animals as new tool exploring hydrological conditions under which agricultural production was taking place. This development has potential to improve understanding water management strategies in past, particularly relation seasonal floodwater agriculture wetland (for example, rice paddy systems). will open wider possibilities use isotopes archaeology ecology examine habitat by both people animals.

Wetlands and Agriculture
The values of wetlands are commonly known among the general population— waterfowl habitat, sport fisheries, timber, recreation, and so forth. More importantly, ecological wetland functions such as nutrient cycling and mitigation (filtering) of pollutants are becoming more widely recognized, especially in the agricultural community. So then what is the importance of agriculture and wetlands? Alt...
متن کاملApplications of Isotopes and Radiation in Agriculture*
When people think of atomic energy they often have nuclear reactors in mind. Few, however, realize that another aspect of atomic energy has changed their daily lives during the last 20 or 30 years. When the International Atomic Energy Agency came into being in 1957, one of its major initial objectives was to promote the wider use of radioisotopes and radiation sources in research, industry, agr...

line survey has been made to study interstellar 32 S= 34 S and 34 S= 33 S ratios from the galactic disk. The four CS isotopomers were detected in 20 star forming regions with galactocentric distances between 3 and 9 kpc. From a comparison of line velocities, the C 33 S J=2{1 rest frequency is 250 kHz below the value given in the Lovas (1992) catalog. Taking 12 C= 13 C ratios from Wilson & Rood ...

Abrupt disappearance of mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (MIF-S) from the geologic record and an apparent ingrowth in seawater sulfate around 2.45 billion years ago (Ga) signal the first large-scale oxygenation of the atmosphere [the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE)]. Pre-GOE O2 production is evident from multiple other terrestrial and marine proxies, but oceanic O2 concentrations...
متن کاملThe use of sulfur isotopes to monitor the effectiveness of constructed wetlands in controlling acid mine drainage
Present address: S.C. Hsu, IT Corporation, 111 N. Canal St, Suite 941, Chicago IL 60606, USA Abstract Acid drainage containing high levels of iron, manganese, and sulfate is a pollution problem widely associated with abandoned coal mines. The remediation of these sites commonly falls to public agencies, so policy-makers need to allocate scarce resources over many sites and to find cost-effectiv...
